What companies manufactured shocks for A2?

Unread post by whirook » September 30th, 2008, 11:48 am

Does anyone know what companies manufactured the rear shocks for the A2?
The old rear shocks that were on mine were Monroe.
The new ones I just received yesterday are stamped "MAECO 11660224 COD01B2".
Have not had a chance to put them side by side yet to see if the dimensions are the same.
Thanks in advance!!!!!

Thats interesting, The reason I asked is because I was led to believe that there were no longer any to be found. I have an A1 so I have no personal need for them.

If I remember correctly there were only three companies making shocks in the sixties - seventies. Monroe, Gabriel and another that escapes me at this time. There were many companies that bought from them and rebranded, same with tires. There are only a few companies making all of the tires and they sell them to the other companies who put their names on them.

There's something not quite right here, I think.

P/N 11641029 NSN 00-176-9466 is the rear shock used on A2-series vehicles.

P/N 11660224 NSN 00-168-9937 is used on the M561 and M792 GamaGoat vehicles.

Having said that, the specs are not too dissimilar:-

According to the CAGEC, the 11660224 was manufactured by Harsco Corpn, York, PA and the 11641029 was made by Monroe, IL.

Looks like MAECO was an additional supplier of gamagoat shocks. They are based in Meridianville, AL

Anyway, forget all this tech guff, can you post a photo of your new shock, please? Would like to see how it compares to the A2 original shock. Thanks..............
Kind regards....
Ken

Makes sense considering Murray was big into Gamma Goats at one time. The length difference should be alright and the bushings can be changed to fit but how about the valveing? Gamma goats were a lot heavier and had a lot more unsprung weight to control. I would guess the goat shocks are going to be quite stiff.

The plot thickens :?
I rang my Dad today to get him to check a pair of NOS A2 shocks I have in his shed.

The numbers stamped on the shock:
11660224
665050
Gabriel of Canada
Made in Canada

They have a sticker that says
2540-00-168- 9937
Shock Absorber CML 2998
? (not sure about the last two digits)

Sorry I have no pics but he said they are slightly slimmer than the Monroe shocks.

My NOS A2 shocks are simply marked:

11641029

No other identification markings at all.

Thank you very much for the help!
I will post a photo of them when I get a chance.
Btw work & putting in new hardwood flooring for my sister I have not had any free time.

I was able to put the new (gama goat 11660224) shock next to an old one (M151A2 11641029).
Main difference is that the gama goat has upper sleeve that covers the piston rod.
The new shock is approx 1/2" longer both compressed and extended.
The other thing I noticed is that the old one seems to only have resistance when trying to extend it.
The new shock seems to have resistance in both directions.

Is there anyone out there that has the gama goat shock (11660224) installed on a m151A2?

Just wondering how they perform?

With the exception of some racing shocks all shocks should have resistance in both directions. Were you holding the old shocksin the normal position? Modern shocks are just about all gas shocks and position is not as critical but older shocks had to be used in the position they were designed for. That would be with the cylinder down and the rod up. If you do cycle theshock upside down it will get air in the valving and you will have to cycle it in the normal position a few times to purge the air. I have no way of knowing but seeing that the goats used heavier tires and wheels I would say the goat shocks are valved quite a bit stiffer. This is not something you can see or feel by hand.

If the shock is a half an inch longer that may cause a problem. If you were to off road your vehicle the extra length could allow the wheel arm to extend farther down and allow the coil spring to come loose from it's perch. Thus causing it to either fall out of get out of position.
There is one nut on a M151 that is very difficult to remove.....

I have a slightly longer shock on the rear of my A2 and I've made 2 modifications to keep the coil from popping out.

First I installed off road straps to keep the arm from articulating too far.

Second, I installed clamps that lock the coil in place to the arm and the frame. It's just a metal plate that sandwiches the coil onto the arm. And four small blocks of steel that bolt into the frame and clamp onto the coil.

I haven't had any problems at all with the modificaitons.

Ok here is two photos of the shocks side by side.
The top one is the one off my m151a2.
The bottom on is the gama goat shock.
Sorry they are on the small size.
I could not get the larger versions to down load.
Any suggestions?
I can email the large version if anyone wants a closer look.
