Large charging system

Unread post by kvan » June 9th, 2016, 12:52 am

Hi, I am new to M151’s. I acquired a 1966 M151A1 and I can’t seem to find out much about it. It has a lot more electrical components under the hood as compared to the other ones I have seen. I assume this was for radio installations? Any info would be helpful.
The generator has 4 belts
Thank you very much for your time.

well, not much to add. You have a large charging system and it was used with big radios in the back. I would assume your rear fenders have a number of holes from the mountings in it.

I have an A2 and it was originally equipped with a 120A charging system, it looks however different to the one you have. They whole jeep was called MRC-83A I think in my case.

It looks like the 180-amp charging system for the Xenon searchlight unit.

Since its there , shouldnt there be signs of the searchlight mounts in the back area?

There are definitely holes in the bed. There is a large triangle shaped outline in the bottom of the bed with the point of the triangle pointing towards the back.
Thanks for the replies,
Kyle

That's the confirmation !

Kyle.... does your vehicle still have its original dash dataplate? I'd appreciate knowing the Army serial number (hood number) for my research. Thanks.

Dont know what your plans are for the jeep but that item may have value for someone building a searchlight vehicle.
A simple 60 amp alternator would be fine for you.
If that unit failed on you it would probably be a bear to fix.
Just a thought.

That is a really rare unit. There is a guy on the show circuit, his name is Carl, that has a spotlight 151 and also has or had another spotlight. He is at the first spot on the left coming in at the Gilbert show every year.

My original intention was to sell it because I am a Flat fender enthusiast. I have had a 1942 MB and I have a restored 1952 M38 that I still own. I also own an M100 trailer. But the more I worked on this MUTT the more I am becoming attached. It is uncut and original. I have it running and almost everything works. I will get a picture of the bed in a couple of days to show the layout of what was mounted. All of the data plates are intact. The body plate does not mention anything about a light or radios. For right now here is what I have.
Thank you again for all your help.

Turn signal has been moved from the original location. That's odd. Really straight body, even the grill and front of the fenders are straight!

Turn signal mount is still where it belongs. Interesting...

Here is the outline in the bed. I am not sure what type of mount this would have been.
Thanks,
Kyle

Well, that answers it. I bet those lights are a bit rare. That explains the charging system.
Here is a pic of when I found it in a back yard under a tree. The previous owner only used it for hunting. I put the original tires back on it. The old owner wanted to keep the ones in this pic.
Anyway, thank you for all your help.
