Front suspension/steering set up

Unread post by Rossco » January 3rd, 2017, 5:08 am

Kia Ora and Happy New year to all

Well after 18 hours of hard work my Mutt has now been reduced to a basic bare shell sans motor, front and rear suspension and related wiring brake lines etc.
Next step is for the remaining body and panel parts to head of the the company who specialise in chemical stripping auto bodies when they open in a weeks time after our Xmas, New year holiday break. It was an interesting experience pulling the whole thing down into its various component parts, found a couple of surprises on the journey where parts were in need of replacement and where creative people had modified the original set up, including the use of engine main bearing bolts to secure some suspension parts? -NB:These will be replaced with correct spec bolts/fastenings.
In preparation for the eventual rebuild I am gathering data so I can stick it all back together and make it work as the original manufacturer intended, hence my question- What are the specs for the front wheel alignment on a mutt i.e. Camber, Castor toe in (or out)

Regards - Nga Mihi

Your place that does chemical stripping auto bodies, do they clean the bodies after the dip? I have heard about residual chemical stripping agent left behind. Ask them if they have any sort of rust prevention treatment dip. It would be nice to get that inside all the channels after stripping. Just a few thoughts. Alan

Front wheel alignment specs, manual TM 9-2320-218-20 Sep. 1971, Page 2-192, section 2-150.

Manual free for download here. http://www.g838.org/g838_manuals/TM%209 ... ep1971.pdf

And on the chemical stripping make SURE they have a neutralizer and rust preventative for inside the cavities you are not going to be able to access with paint. Otherwise it will rot out in a couple years. It is only made of folded sheet metal. The rust preventative needs to be a permanent type like a coating, not just a temporary type for flash rust. Blasting will not usually get to these areas although they are generally rusty from original assembly with no rust prevention.

Thanks for your observations/concerns re chemical stripping of my Mutt bodywork. The company I am using here in NZ have extensive experience in this method and do a lot of work for the Auto restoration trade in this part of the world Treatment includes full immersion plus neutralizing, rust treatment/prevention and priming to get into all those areas you cannot normally access on a Mutt.
