Freeze/Expansion Plugs
Did you guys ever notice when you go to the local auto parts store and ask for freeze plugs you get that strange quizical look like a dog gives you when you play a harmonica? Nobody around here can provide the 21/8" freeze plugs for the side of the Mutt block and I was wondering where you guys obtain them and what your sources were.Thanx
Re: Freeze/Expansion Plugs
I was able to easily obtain them from my local NAPA store. Of course I had to provide the size as a listing for the M151 wasn't in the book.

Re: Freeze/Expansion Plugs
When i go to the local auto parts store for a part on my vintage stuff, I know what it is I want. But they always first want to know what vehicle and year. So I play along and tell them and then they finally give up and say, we don't have that in our computer. Then I give them a part number and they go find it.

The last ones I bought came from Red River Parts & Equipment Co. in New Boston TX. They are part# 8754579 NSN# 2930-00-678-1397 at $3.95 ea, ask for Blake Callaway at 903-547-2226
PS: if you get them at an Auto Parts Store make sure you get the "CUP" type not the disk type.

As a side note, the 151 motor has 5 of these plugs, there are 4 in the block and 1 in the head and they are "all" the same size.
Rear of the block, the upper one is the water jacket opening and the lower one is the Camshaft.
Left side of block.
Rear of the head. I didn't get a direct photo of the rear of the head but you can see it in these 3 photos.

Re: Freeze/Expansion Plugs
I would wipe off the sealer on the face of the one going over the camshaft, you don't want sealer in the bearing. The rest of them the sealer will help to protect them from rusting out. I go a bit further and prime and paint them with epoxy paint and when dry I wire wheel the edges and goop up the edges with sealer. Yea, I know, overkill. But they will last longer than I will!
