Fibre clutches

Unread post by Fil Bonica » January 12th, 2017, 11:03 pm

This came up before but dont remember the answer.
What do you have to do when you use a fibre clutch?
How do you handle a current pressure so that functions properly?
Goingto do a changeout shortly any help would be appreciated.

To clarify my post,
I remember something a out having to change the settings on the pressure plate springs to accomodate the fibre clutch disk.
George made some comment on the proper adjustment.

When I replaced my clutch disk I just did it(I think from fiber to disk)I thought the only difference is the disc would eat up my flywheel

Here is the old thread about the clamping force of the pressure plates. http://www.g838.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t ... isc#p76525. I am using a late A2 pressure plate with an early A1 fiber disc and I have no problems. I am starting to get some chatter now but I had to put the fiber disc on a torn up flywheel from a puck clutch because my "NOS" flywheel was bad. So this disc was at a disadvantage from the beginning but it has lasted five years, three of them trail riding the mountains in Virginia. TJ, I am wondering if you had a bad pressure plate or glazed flywheel?

hi fil

there are two disk numbers puck and fiber
i think 10913204 old number A 1 is the fiber
the 8712372 is a new number A2 is the puck one

for the pressure plate the same numbers bud a -1 added
8328265 and 8328265-1
i think the one without the -1 is the fiber pressure plate

if the puck plate is thicker as the fiber plate
and you use the wrong pressure plate the pressure is to low
the clutch will slip and it is still not wear out

normally wen you put the clutch at the flywheel
bolts hand tide you can move the disk by hand up and down
now you must have minimum a half clutch plate thickens between the flywheel and the mounting surface of the pressure assy
if not you have the wrong pressure plate assy and you can NOT worn the disk complete out before slipping

below the old thread

nobody had a response on the thickens difference of the disk and pressure plate numbers :(

Hello gang....
here's a copy of a conversation I had with Gavin in Thailand. It follows on from an earlier conversation with Rod (also based in Thailand). Rod had asked about a variant pressure plate for the M151 and what the differences were.Rod had a clutch replacement kit and wanted to know if he could use the fibre clutch instead of the puck version. He took various measurements to double check his installation would work.
Gavin asked a very similar question and here's the reply, from me, based on Rod's checks on disks and plates.

Subj: Re: Clutch Plate
I spent a dull Sunday poring over my collection of TMs going back to 1960 (yes, I know, I should get a life).

Some interesting information turned up.

The "optional" pressure plate (8328265-1) appears in the Jan 1972 issue of the -34P. That's well before the "puck" clutch was introduced. Going further back in time, to the July 1968 issue of the -34, the 8328265-1 type pressure plate is also listed. So it definitely was not introduced on account of a puck-type disk. As it so happens, the puck clutch is the same thickness as the regular asbestos disk so when the puck clutch was introduced, there was no requirement for a redesigned pressure plate.

Oddly enough, the optional pressure plate retained the same NSN as the original pressure plate. The reason? It was different because it was a different manufacturer to the usual company. Different part, same NSN. So there is no "special" pressure plate for the puck-type disc.....it has the same function, it probably has a slightly different appearance (moulding marks etc).

You may be interested to know that the pressure plate for the M38 and M38A1 jeeps is the same as for the M151-series....they interchange seamlessly.

And Ken (the guy without a life) comes through for us again! Thanks Ken. We all have a purpose in life and you have made yours to make sure the M-151 is as well documented as is humanely possible. I for one thank you for that.

I can sleep soundly knowing that the two jeeps I have with fibre clutches will perform correctly.
Shortly we will start on a third
Once again thank you Ken.
