overload springs

Unread post by Mulerider » January 21st, 2017, 6:12 pm

I am new to posting on this although I have read many of the post and they have been very helpful. I recently bought a 1967 M151A1 and in the process of restoring it. The rear wheels seem to tow in at bottom. Didn't think it looked right. Recently saw a post that some jeeps had overload springs. Looked close at my Mutt and noticed that it has a smaller spring inside the main spring. I assume this is the overload spring and plan to remove them. Will this allow the rear tires to set more 90 degrees to the ground. Front wheels look to set right but also have the extra springs.
Am I right to remove all four small springs?

The rear wheels will still sit close to the same but at least the rear suspension will now move. Those overloads were used in 106 gun jeeps and I think some of the monster radio installations. The rear wheels will always sit like that due to the swing arm suspension on the A1, the A2 went to a trailing arm rear suspension.

yes, remove all four extra springs. Driving it with them and have no load in the jeep is dangerous.

Mulerider,
can you please post some photos of your vehicle before you start removing inner springs? This could be a special purpose vehicle (like the mine-detector version)....but it could of course be a half-assed restoration by a previous owner. Let's help you determine exactly what you've got before you start butchering it.
If it was a recoilless rifle carrier version, it should only have overload springs at the rear, not all-round. And what does it say on the dataplates?
If you haven't figured out how to post pictures, send them to me and I'll post them for you. Then we should be able to tell you what it is/was.

Thanks for responses to overload springs. I don't think it was a 106 jeep, if I remember correctly the 106 was longer than regular jeep. May have been one of the other options. I have already removed the rear springs and have pictures I will try to send.
I will post pictures if someone can give me some help with that?

Also is the TM9-2320-218-20 Sept 71 the best how to manual for the Mutt

I was sent a couple of photos of Mulerider's A1 and here they are. I looked closely at the photos and I couldn't see any reason why the vehicle had been fitted with overload springs at each corner. I reckon it was a previous civilian owner playing about with the suspension. Anyone else suggest a reason? It isn't a recoilless rifle carrier and it isn't a Xenon searchlight version. It has had a radio in it at some time but probably not much more than an RT524 so there's no reason for the extra springs.
Anyway, he is checking out the length of the four main springs to ensure that they are correct for each location. I'm sure he will chime in here.

Ken thanks for posting the pictures for me. As you and I discussed I think I will look for a couple of 11 inch springs to put on the rear and see if that will let the rear wheels set out a little more. Have some located, just have to pick them up.

Before looking for new springs try going for a spin around the block. The fact that those springs have been without any weight stress for quite some time and that you've just set the jeep on the ground, they may just need to settle in some before they sit 'right'.

The stock springs are 11", They appear to be much higher than 11" and they are not going to settle.
