Starter Differences

Unread post by bazookajoe » January 27th, 2017, 7:00 pm

When I was installing a starter in my rebuilt engine I noticed that the bendix engaged the flywheel when i turned it over by hand. Apparently there are some differences in bendix drives as i have two styles. My question is is the bell housing identical between the a1 and a2? Is there a difference in the length or the way it engages the flywheel? Is there a difference in the bendix for the a1 and a2?

Should be the same, is your bendix locked in? you can lock it in by turning by hand, starting of the engine will unlock it.

For sure the same for A1 and A2. Small typo above, you cannot disengage the Bendix by hand once you turned it.

So Horst, I see what you mean about the bendix extends when turned by hand but doesn't retract, my question to you is, when the motor starts and spins the starter at high rpm's, the bendix then retracts to a length that clears the ring gear?

Correct, you can also disengage them by using the wire wheel on a bench grinder.
