Vacuum Pump Rehab

Unread post by bazookajoe » February 12th, 2017, 7:54 pm

Had a vacuum pump on the shelf to install on an A-1 block and thought I would rebuild it and found it was in good condition except for the seal around the actuator rod that is pumped by the arm to the cam. That seal is the same as on many AC fuel and vacuum pumps of the same manufacture. I also found that it was full of oil. After replacing that rod seal it worked well on the bench. The check valves and diaphragm were in good order so i didn't replace them.I found the vacuum pump on my running A-1 in the same condition, so i removed and rehabbed it also. I think rebuild kits can be obtained for these pumps.
I think the bad rod seal allows oil to be pushed up nearly to the wiper motors.

I can't see how oil could get to the wipers since the airflow is in the opposite direction. The oil would go in the direction of the intake manifold. I do have several of the rebuild kits for those pumps.

Yes on both counts but, that little seal doesn't come in the rebuild kit ( at least not in the 3 I have ) so if you have a good number on a replacement please share it with us. Thanks. :)

I have had good luck with a firm called Then and Now Automotive, Upon calling them ,you give them the 4 digit number on the flange of the vacuum pump that bolts to the block. The seal I used is from one of many AC fuel/vacuum partial rebuild kits i have laying around as they are similar from AC pump to pump. I always buy partial kits at shows for peanuts because the little check valves last forever and you can salvage many components from different kits to make repairs. So, instead of paying $65 dollars for a kit, you may only need a few parts from a partial kit.
