Differential Woes

Unread post by bazookajoe » February 14th, 2017, 9:19 pm

After reading the previous post about the diffs i went out to the shop to examine the ones i have on the shelf. On an early one with the number 8 at the start of the number on it, i believe this is indicative of the early series diffs as i think the A-2's have diffs with a 11 at the start of the number on it. Anyway the yokes have a noticible wobble on the splines on the shaft even though the bolt that holds it in is tight. Does this mean its toast , i had replaced it because it was noisy. There is no such wobble on any of my other diffs......any ideas?

Are you talking about the input yoke? I would think the splines would keep it from moving and the whole shaft is moving. It might just be that Pinion Carrier Bearing Race and Adjuster are loose allowing the shaft to wobble with the bearing inside the race. Alan

A lot of times a bent or wobbly axle shaft from a bad U-joint will cause the yoke to loosen up on the differential spline. You probably need a new yoke.

The yokes definitely wobble on the splines on the shaft, good point Rick, i think some new yokes are in order.

Joe.... PS Magazine had a short article about loose yokes. If you send me an e-mail, I'll then have your return address and I will send you a copy of it.
