Drive shaft universal joints

Unread post by Rossco » March 14th, 2017, 4:38 am

Kia ora all

Another question for the group - Are the universal joints on the drive shafts - (between the diff and wheels) - unique to the M151? If not then what other vehicles use the same version UJ? As I would have expected my Transmission and Drive Line parts supplier here in New Zealand does not have a specific listing for a MUTT M151 and he cannot find anything similar which will work?
Also the same question applies in relation to the Prop shaft universal joints - Transmission to Diff/s - are these also unique to the M151 or is there an alternative which will work?

Rossco.....
many people have tried to find alternatives. For the joints on the transfer-to-diff driveshafts...there are no alternatives.
For the wheel-to-diff shafts, some people have found similar-looking joints that turned out to be close...but not close enough for a satisfactory fit. Some parts of this joint were usable (IIRC two of the end-caps) but the complete joint when fitted had end-play. Save yourself a load of grief and get the proper u-joints. Save the old joints and when necessary cannibalise them to make a couple of complete spare ones.

Ken

Thanks for the quick response. I suspected this may be the case and these UJ's were unique to these vehicles but had to ask.
On stripping down the driveshafts/prop-shafts I have found all the Universal Joints on my MUTT are past their best and will need to be replaced.
