Hi,

Is it the hood that came off the Mutt or a replacement, sorry didn't read every post.

I have purchased 2 NOS hoods that are just like the one you have, gap wise that is.

The Hoods I took off the Mutts fit much closer but were dented to heck, hence the replacement.

I have purchased several NOS Mutt parts that are probably NOS because they are out of spec! And thats probably why they are out there.

One test to make would be measure the hood from the bottom across the top to the far bottom and get a running linear measurement to compare to goods that fit better.

I suggested that but never got any response with measurements. One of the other members sent his measurements of his older hood that way.

Yes, I felt the absolutely best way to do it would be to measure it linearly but Rick's method (which I used to provide measurements) is equally valid. If he doesn't have a cloth tape measure it would be just as simple to take a piece of string, lay it over, mark it with a sharpie and lay it out flat and measure it.

If there are indeed out of spec hoods out there  it would be a good idea to get measurements posted for what is considered IN SPEC.

Given the protracted process for making these hoods, I cannot imagine how they could accidentally be created too short. (A more learned member such as Guy might have a comment about that.) Could it be that "shorties" were created as a solution, rather than truly being out of spec? By way of example, if through rough use, a M151's body gets tweaked a little and by that I mean just enough to put the hood down on the fender tops, there are really only three solutions. Write it off, put it on a frame straightening machine (and it isn't bloody likely the military kept many of those laying about) or go for a shorter hood and put it back into service. This is all complete theory, of course and the acid test of that theory would be that a shorty hood would have a part number and that would be listed somewhere.

Cheers,
TJ

If it got bent up to hit the hood then it was really crashed and junk anyway but other than that if there was an interference they just hit it with a hammer, interference gone. I can see Seabee chiming in on this anytime now, I mentioned using a hammer.
