Transmission won't go in 1,2,3,4 gear
This is probably an old question but I'm not much good at search on forums.
I have a 1967 M151A1. The transmission will go in reverse just fine and the jeep backs up, but the shifter will not move into the forward gears, sweeps left and right in neutral just fine.
This jeep was driving just fine, all gears , 4 wheel dr. and all, no noises.
I parked it about 2 yr.ago and now the transmission don't work.
I don't know what might go bad in gears in oil, just sitting.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes I live in south central Mo. . No I didn't get flooded. I am blessed.

Re: Transmission won't go in 1,2,3,4 gear
Welcome to the site, John, the first thing I would do is pull the hat off the tranny and check the shifter shafts and forks, probably froze from sitting. I've also had a worn tranny that would get hung in gear, I would have to go in and realign shift forks. Hambone

Transmissions that are just sitting can still get a lot of water in them from condensation. Hot daytime temps and then when it cools off at night it puls damp moisture laden air into the transmission which then condenses on the sides above the oil line and runs down into the oil. I have seen NOS trannies rusted solid inside from this, also trannies that have been sitting. If you don't want to pull the cover and top off at least pull the drain plug and see what comes out. I think no matter what the top is going to have to come off.

If you find the shifter cover is not usable have several.
$40.00 plus shipping.

I agree with Rick. First, drain and see what comes out which is always a good idea. My guess is condensation (particularly if you live in that type of environment) and rust as a result, which leads me to believe there was yet another problem beforehand...likely low lubricant levels which would be a perfect set-up for rust accumulation in the top as it wouldn't be getting it's normal lubrication.
Pulling the top off is as easy as falling off a log and requires no special tools or skills... and in the final analysis, even if you never looked and "magically" got it working again, you'd still want to know what the hang-up was in the first place.
Cheers,
TJ

John.... the guys here have given you good advice. But before you start pulling the transmission cover, try this.johnpg wrote: Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
1. Make sure the gear shift is in neutral;
2. Unclip the rubber boot that sits at the bottom of the stick from the gearshift tower;
3. Unscrew the shift retaining collar;
4. Pull the gear shift lever up and out of the transmission....keeping it in the neutral position;
5. Now look down inside the transmission with a flashlight and make sure that all the shifter forks are lined up correctly.
6. If they aren't, use a strong screwdriver or similar to lever the forks back into position.
Re-assemble and try again.
If the shifter forks were already lined up, or if there is visible sign of damage or water ingress, you'll have to take off the transmission cover....but make sure you pull the shift lever out when in neutral.
Ken
Kind regards....
