Engine Replacement?
Things are going from bad to worse... OK, started off needing an oil pump, then a few bearings and seals, now the rebuilders tell me I also need 30 thou oversize pistons, 30 thou oversize conrod bearings, 20 thou oversize main bearing plus the cost of their work so it is starting to really blow my budget out of the water. Not even sure if I can get those parts so I am starting to look at all options, e.g. will it be a better deal to buy an engine? Are there suppliers of parts for these engines branded/used in other machinery so I can source them in Australia? And so on.
Have seen NOS and certified rebuilds advertised in Greece, saw a NOS advertised in the US for USD2500 and am wondering if that is about ball park price?

Re: Engine Replacement?
I was kind of afraid of that when you described the cylinder liners and no oil pressure. 2500 for NOS is about the going price BUT, BUT! I have seen two NOS engines that were junk. Just ask Horst on here about his NOS engine. And Mr. Dibbles from way back also got one that was full of rust. These engines are 40 plus years old and have not been atmospherically preserved. They get condensation in them from hot and cold and it just lays there and creates rust. This is not in all of them or even in most of them but when you are talking about shipping one around the world unless it is going to be torn apart before the sale it is just not worth it. There are thousands of good take out engines out there for a few hundred dollars each. I would imagine the shipping to Australia is steep but they should be available in many European and Asian countries.

Re: Engine Replacement?
Howard,
I'm in the process of rebuilding several M151 engines that will be complete and tested. I'm sure I can box them and assist with shipping, but I fear the cost to send them down your way (from Florida, USA) would be very high. If you wish to explore this, I'd need to know what all you need. Just a short block, block and head, complete engine with carb, alternator or generator.... and so on......
Let me know.

Re: Engine Replacement?
Are parts for Ford M151 engine, e.g. piston, conrod bearing, the same as those for an AM General M151A2?

Re: Engine Replacement?
Yes they are but the engines are not made by Ford, they were made by Hercules.

Re: Engine Replacement?
You are thinking about fixing that engine of yours? I think you will spend as much doing that as you would to get a known good engine. The fact it has cylinder liners would make my shy away from it. That block was not designed for liners and there is not really enough metal to machine away to make the liner fit and have the right amount left for a strong block. That may be why it ate up the bearings, I can't believe someone would sleeve it and not do the bearings at the same time.
