In my opion that cotter pin in the photo is way to short. Shouldn't the ends be bended around the nut it self?

It's bent. The bent section is pointing straight at the camera at the 5:40 position.

It makes no difference where the ends go since the shear point is at the thread and bolt joint.

Seems to me if the spindle has a key-way, a keyed washer with the bend-up tabs would be an almost perfect solution for that particular problem. My half track has 'em and my scout car had 'em. They worked perfectly.

For that to work the spindle has to have a flat spot for the washer to key on, hence the "keyed" washer.
