WHAT ENGINE OIL ARE YOU USING?

Unread post by 64 M151 » June 1st, 2017, 8:37 pm

I have search and search for an engine oil that will work for my MUTTs. All I could find is synthetic or oils that have little or no Zinc content until I ran across this one. Ford Power Stroke Diesel 15W40. It has the required Zinc content for our older engines that hasn't been over hauled with new components that will take the newer oils.

Rotella 15w-40 is often stated on this site. Supposedly had a higher zinc phosphorous content but from things I've read recently on the net that no longer seems to be true and supposedly they have been using less zinc phosphorous to meet higher environmental requirements but other additives were used to offset this.. I did find in my recent searches that http://www.valvoline.com/our-products/m ... racing-oil may be a better alternate choice now. I currently have the rotella but a switch may be in order at the next change.

I use 15W-40 Rotella but as was said they are even taking the Zinc and Phosphorus out of that now that the new diesels are all set up for ultra low sulfur fuels and emissions testing. I think it is coming down to putting additives in the oil to bring those components back up for the older engines that need them.

If cost is no issue;then Joe gibbs oils or Brad penn oils have the most zinc/phosphorus...zinc is NOT what protects cams..its the phosphorus!...zinc acts as a carrier in the oil to help the phosphorus do its job....Brad penn can be ordered on line and shipped to your local walmart.Joe gibbs oil is at summit racing or online ordering.
