Timing

Once my engine is rebuilt I will need to set the timing. I have a good timing light that clamps on the lead but I suspect it will not work on the shielded cables. The adapter for this seems to be pretty rare and unobtainable so I have to find another solution. I was thinking of using a standard plug on cylinder 1 and a standard lead from that to the distributor which is not too difficult to set up. However it would be preferable not to do that if I want to do a check anytime without too much hassle.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem?

Just take an old regular plug wire and strip the ends off and leave the center conductor hanging out an inch or so on each end. Stick one end in the number one hole in the distributor and the other end in the number one spark plug. Clamp your timing light right on. Bet you didn't think it would be that easy did you? Just be sure to hook you 12 volt timing light up to a separate battery or between the terminal of ONE of the mutt batteries. I will usually use a lawn mower battery.

Thanks Guys. I have more old plug wires than you can poke a stick at plus I am the one in the street with Landys ') Lots of pakistani plug wires that were fudging the system when I got it...

Keep an eye on the "For sale" sections on the military vehicle forums and on Ebay, the timing lights and adapters pop up from time to time, I picked up a nice set a couple months ago for $50, shipping included.
