Brake light issues.

Unread post by recon217 » June 21st, 2017, 7:48 am

Hi,
I bought an A2 over the weekend and this morning I realized that the brake lights aren't working properly. With the light switch in "Stop Lights" or "Service Drive" the brake right light comes on and stays on only flickering when the pedal is depressed, the left light does nothing at all. Both turn signals do work. I read the other posts here about brake light problems and I noticed that the turn signal switch is sometimes a cause for brake light issues. Could this be my problem?
Thanks in advance.
Mike Haines.

the A2 has a mechanical brake light switch, connecting with a rod to the brake pedal. It has two connectors to the harness. So you can disconnect the switch and replace with a piece of wire. If the brake lights come on as desired, it is apparently the switch or the rod alignment is the issue.

As I posted in other article if it is not the switch or sdjustments a schematic will show that 75 leads of the lght switch go to the main lite switch first before the turn signal.
While they are robust they are knowned to fail.
Keep in mind that there may be a failure in main cable to the rear.
This can be determined by opening the connection between front harness and rear under the dash

Update
New turn signal switch did the trick, now I just need to fine tune the brake light linkage.
