wheel cylinders

Unread post by dauntless225 » July 11th, 2017, 3:54 am

Bought a complete set of wheel cylinders from a US vendor and there were no Wagner markings or numbers on any of them and the bleeder screws were 10MM. I would have thought there would have at least been a part number stamped on them. Also had to grind a flat spot on top of the front cylinders about 3/32" down and 3/4" back. above the bleeder screw to clear the fulcrum on the backing plate to get them to fit. There was a noticeable difference in the center hump. The ends of all cylinders didn't have a recess for the rubber seal lip to fit over, All ends were rounded with machine marks. Did I get China knock offs?

wheel cylinders

Yes. I got similar ones with exactly that need for machining them to fit. I complained with my vendor and got a replacement. Fitted but still some repro device. Worked nevertheless.

I got a PM wanting to know who I got them from. I got them off eBay. Armytankguy was seller. Shows in listing painted red oxide wheel cylinders stamped with part # and you get these China wheel cylinders. He said he has sold 159 sets with no complaints as mine. Only problem I've been down for over a month waiting for a guy on this site who got ill and those pictured in the listing look like NOS and so I bought them. He said he'd take them back but I got them to work and their on the Jeep. I asked him just to cover the shipping of $7.00 to call it even for the work I had to do on the front wheel cylinders. He wouldn't even do that.

ebay has a recourse for listings 'not as listed or described'. You should be able to get it addressed through them. read the listing carefully to see if he states 'picture is bot of actual part' or some other baloney. I've bought parts from him without problems in the past, but YMMV.

Wanted to give members a heads up on these. Some don't have a grinder or a machine shop to do the work. A file won't get it done. I know some probably work under a tree like I used to. Some are on a fix income like me. $ 65.00 doesn't seem like a lot of money but when it needs to go for other things it is. I had the option of sending them back ,but there's the fuel to post office, shipping cost again. Another $10.00 gone . I got them to fit . They are working fine. One thing is listed and you get another. I thought the refund of $7.00 for shipping was cheap for the work I had to do on them. Another thing is the recess at the end of the cylinder for the rubber boot , these don't have it ,the boot just slides over the end. Every wheel cylinder I ever replaced and that has been several over 48 years, had the recess for the boot to be securely installed on the cylinder. Some go off road with there 151. I used to since 1969. Not that the boot will slip off due to the lack of the recess but if it does you are going to have a wheel cylinder problem in the near future. Even if you don't off road in mud and water you will still get brake dust there and another problem. Chances are it won't. I'll keep an eye on them. I drive it around the property everyday. One thing for sure. They will be replaced next year when funds come up again. Was one of those I should of sent them back things and didn't. That's on me. It was I want to drive the Jeep with brakes for a change. As Forrest Gump says That's all I got to say about that. If I'd start a turkey farm, they would cancel Thanksgiving.

Yea, we all get that , "I wanna drive it NOW", syndrome once in a while. I have done it many times. That is why I said once you use it you own it. The seller is NOT going to care at that point. I can usually let one bad thing slide but you had several problems, that makes me think more along the lines of not only Chinese but also wrong application. I know someone else who recently bought some 151 wheel cylinders and told me they did not fit. He just bought new ones so I never found out the story on them but I am guessing there is a load of offshore wheel cylinders out there.
