Problem with my rear passenger light

Unread post by richard » August 19th, 2017, 12:40 pm

The tail lights of my M416A1 are working well when the trailer is connected to the Gama Goat and to a friend's M151. But they are not working well when connected to my M151A2. So the problem is on the side of my M151.

First I checked the receptacle for the trailer on my M151. Found nothing.

Second I checked the rear wiring harness. Found a problem. While I have a NOS rear wiring harness laying around, I plugged everything to this new one. And everything was working fine. So I installed the new harness.

After it was done, I turned on the lights and the trailer is still working fine.

But the rear light on the passenger side is no longer working as it should. Switching the lights on, it is working. setting the turn signal to the right, all lights on the rear passenger side are off. Same with the brake pedal.

I checked the cables by their numbers to be sure everything is correctly connected. Did this thress times with no success.

Where can I search now? Changed the lights switch by the one from my Gama Goat which is working. Same problem, it is not the switch.

I checked with my multimeter the front harness where the rear harness is plugged together. Cable #21 and #24 are grounded? Well, can or must be, because #21 is going to #491 of the front composite light. And #24 is directly connected to #20 of the front composite light. While the bulbs are in there, it must go to ground.

Any ideas or suggestions whre I can look?

Thanks,
Richard

The light housing is the ground, It may ground through the other light circuit if all things are in alignment. I would take a jumper wire with clips on the ends and clip on end to the internal metal parts in the light and the other end to a good ground and see if you still have the problem. If you have power to the lights and no lights this is the only solution. Other than blown bulbs, you have checked them haven't you?

Hi Rick,

Yes, I checked the bulbs. They are okay.

I have not removed the rear light housing from the M151 body. Just the rear wiring harness has been replaced by a NOS one.

I will make a test with a jumper wire from the dash to the rear.

Thanks,
Richard

You don't even need to go that far but if you have a long jumper the best way to check grounds is to go directly to the ground terminal of the battery. And on the light end take the lens off and touch the bare metal inside where the outside of the bulb is.
