oil pressure gauge pegs

Unread post by paracord » August 24th, 2017, 1:23 pm

My oil pressure gauge bounces back and forth and then pegs out to max. Do I need a new sending unit or a gauge.?

I'd think loose connection?

Mine did that a few years ago. When I finally got around to checking it, there was a loose connection at the sending unit. I had to squeeze the electrical connector with a pair of pliers to get a good connection at the sending unit.

Loose connection or bad ground, check connection at sending unit, pull the instrument panel and check connections, make sure the hold down bracket has a good ground.

Cleaned all connections at the sending unit and gauge. I always insert a small screw driver in the rubber and squirt WD- 40 in there and then work the screw driver around the rubber and pull the plug out with needle nose pliers. Works like a champ. A a little anti seize going back together and they always come apart easy . Will clean the gauge retainer and clean up in that area. Will get back

Cleaned ground area and even ran a ground wire and gauge still goes crazy.

Similar but different problem. I Replaced the oil pressure gauge a couple of years ago. At first all was OK but the needle tended to vibrate, I figured it was caused by overall vibration while running. Now when I start it pressure comes up to 30 psi but the least little change in engine speed and it goes below zero but pops back up at idle. On the road it will sometime indicate 30 psi and some times below zero. Pretty sure actual oil pressure isn't zero because I have ran it hundreds of miles with it doing this. I checked all the connections and that didn't help. Any clue, gauge, sender wiring???

Had a similar condition with my A2.
Replaced the sender and all was good.
