Steering wheel alignment

Has anyone ever figured out how to align the front wheels and the steering wheel spokes?
I have read the manual over and over....Clear as Mississippi mud!

The adjusting screw on the steering gear does not appear to align these components.

Do we pull the pitman arm and move it over a couple of teeth?

Any help would be appreciated.

Toe in alignment
Manual 2320-218-20-1-2, section 6-19. This gives the entire alignment procedure. This has to be done in conjunction with the above to center the wheel.

You never want to pull a part off and move it to center a steering component. It IS possible that this was done in the past. You will need to establish the center of the steering box by putting the front suspension arms on stands and turning the wheels all the way to one side then count the turns to turn it all the way to the other side. Now turn the wheel back exactly half that number of turns and that will be the center of the steering box, or very close to it. The steering wheel should be in the proper position. Ignore where the tires are at this point. If the tires are straight and the wheel is off then someone has put the wheel on on the wrong position. Follow the procedure in the manuals. You will find that the military manuals cover every single thing there is to do on these vehicles, sometimes it is pretty hard to find it in the manuals but it is there.

So what is "center" for the M151 steering wheel? I've known some military steering wheels have a small place on the steering wheel that the driver can feel so that he knows where his wheel is, relative to center, by feel alone. By way of example, the DUKW has a small convex-headed tack driven into the back of the steering wheel (which is wood) to assist in rudder control (particularly in the dark).

An A2 steering wheel has a diamond embossed on the spoke at 6 oclock.
Some repro wheels are missing this mark.
Dont know about earlier versions.

Actually, I'm jealous. If the day comes where I'm finally to the point where I am aligning my steering wheel, well, that will be a very fine day indeed.
