Just had a chance to look at a civy axle u joint I had in my collection.

NAPA 445

Width is 82.20 nm X 83.50 mm
Caps are 27.0 mm
Caps on one leg have slots for clips .
Other leg does not

Gi width is 82.0 mm both directions
Caps are 27.0mm
About $19.00
Looks like it could be a good replacement.

Fil, was anything further determined on how these NAPA joints will work in place of the military?

It’s worth a try.

The grooves in the caps for the retaining clips are in the wrong place on the NAPA just as they are in the wrong place with Precision caps mentioned in the G838 Wiki. Basically, the NAPA 445, the Precision all have caps that have the grooves in the wrong place for use in our MUTTs. I have not had my hands on a TRW20060 so I will not necessarily rule that one out. I just went through all this earlier this week and ended up paying the premium price for what the seller claims are some NOS ones.

As for the TRW 20060, perhaps someone who has actually had one in hand, would like to comment.

You could employ these to get you off a back country trail but that's about it, because they couldn't be trusted to stay properly placed and what happens when you lose an axle has been discussed here before.

Bottom line is, there are actually quite a few U joints out there that are dimensionally the same as NOS joints for the MUTT -BUT- don't stop there. Until you have one with a properly placed retaining clip groove, you won't have the right thing.

Cheers,
TJ

Or you could do what a Pakistani mechanic (?) did to mine when it was in service over there - put spot welds on the incorrect u join with the right dimensions to hold it in place! Needless to say it has been replace...

I became aware of the difference recently.
Just thru away the one I had in my stash of parts that I got some time ago.

I am curious as to what the difference is in the clip measurement? Could the cap be machined for a different clip placement with a spacer? If so then that may be a viable replacement and we could talk to Guy about the possibility of getting a lot of them and having the caps machined to fit. If that is the only difference.

My NOS ones came in today. They had some rather nasty shelf-wear on the caps but they'll certainly do after a clean-up. I'll be putting them in the shafts today and presenting photos for everyone to see.

I'll also make take some measurements if you would like. I have saved my old stuff so, if required I could easily send one to Guy for measurements. Then he could go measure one of the alternatives at O'Reilly's and he'd have all the data he needed. However, the safety issues being what they are, and this being a rather litigious society, any liability might lead him to pass on the whole project.

However, I agree that a spacer could be a workable alternative. Another alternative would be to take a u joint that comes with two blank caps (those without a groove) and have a groove machined in at the proper place. The expense of having it done would almost certainly negate any savings on NOS but, assuming the supply of NOS is finite, it is also a possible solution.

BTW, I would like to see that bit about the axle u joint crossover in the Wiki eliminated. It's just a waste of time.

Just scrapped the 445 in the trash.
Anybody want it for postage?

I am still reeling from the "GOOD" engine I bought just to get to the old style distributor. Only to find the engine was junk and he knew it. No more buying parts for the good of the community for me!

Remember the engine that had the civilian distributor in it? The guy was trying to sell it for 300.00 and nobody wanted it so I offered to buy the distributor. He would not sell just the distributor but offered me the engine for 100.00 if I paid the shipping. I asked him if the engine turned over and he said he turned it three full rotations. Well I paid Fastenal 190.00 to ship it and when I got it the motor would turn a half turn and go CLUNK! Half turn the other way and CLUNK. I sent him a message and he swore he turned it over. I pulled the head and it was rusted solid in one cylinder and pretty bad in two others, there is no way in hell it could have turned over. I sent him pictures and asked him if his idea of turning it over was rolling the entire engine over in the yard. No refund, nothing. I am stuck with a boat anchor and a Willeys distributor which is what was in it. I wire wheeled the rust out and I am going to put the same head gasket right back on it and clean the plugs and see if I can get it to run.

Ahhh....but you have great potential there. If it won't run reasonably well, I think you should make it into a cutaway motor or even easier, clean it up, paint it, detail it with all appropriate stickers and make it into a coffee table for a man cave.

Challenge laid....but....will the challenge be accepted?

At todays prices it will fetch me roughly 20 bucks at the scrapyard. You want it? Call Fastenal and set it up and I will send it to you for YOUR man cave!

Now Rick, you KNOW no one has taken out the trash in New Jersey in, like, FOREVER. I think it's some kind of law y'all have up there.
