Rear main and transmission replacement

Unread post by mallard » October 15th, 2017, 6:42 pm

I just pulled my motor this afternoon, I have to replace my rear main seal and my transmission. Are there any tips or tricks I need to know pulling everything apart? Thanks for the help

Pull the transmission out of the bell housing first, don't try to pull the bell and trans together.

As Rick said separate the tansmission from bell housing first.
It would be a good time to also inspect flywheel and clutch.

Thanks for the help, got it all taken off no problem. Now that photobucket is useless I don't know how to post pictures of the clutch. The flywheel and pressure plate don't have any grooves and the clutch plate doesn't seem bad. It doesn't have too many miles on it.

What is the best way to get the rear main seal out now? Thanks again for the help

I have been using Postimage to post pictures. See directions below.

And if you use CHROME as a browser you can out the photobucket embed fix app on there and after that you will see all photobucket images that you can't see in the other browsers.

Thanks for all the help. I'll pull it tonight and start putting it back together. Couple quick questions,

on the clutch plate center, one side of the hub stick further out than the other. Which side goes faces the motor?

The throw out bearing is round on one side and has ears on the other. Which side faces the motor?

To align the cultch plate I plan to use my old clutch shaft. Is it hard to pull or should I just cut it off flush with the old transmission.

Thanks!

The clutch disk is marked Flywheel side.
Look for that marking.
The throw out bearing should be installed so that the flat machined surface faces the throw out arm:
I have always used an old used tansmission input shaft to center the disk.

Thanks for the help, I'm finally getting around to putting in the transmission I got from you Fil!

I got the seal out and the new seal in no problem thanks to your link.

I believe I have the puck style clutch now. It has 6 pads on each side that look like brake pads. Should I go ahead and change to the fiber disk style? If so do I need to change the fly wheel also?

I used a fiber disc on a pressure plate designed for the puck style and still driving it 6 tears later. Flywheel will be fine either way as long as it is not torn up. Mine actually was and I still got away with it although it did take a toll on the new clutch.

Was the clutch OK before you tore it down? If it's not broke, don't replace it. If it is the puck style, check the depth of the rivets, if they're not getting close, I would use it.

also I cannot figure out how to get the input shaft out of the old transmission. If I just cut it off right where it goes into the transmission will I have enough length to alight it? Thanks again.

hi

to take the shaft out you must lower the secondary shaft otherwise the synchro ring do not past the gear below
or you must pull the bearing first of and try i do not know if this give enough room
to center the plate i look at the side the pressure plate is nearly the same size as the clutch plate diameter so you can center it by looking there

You are going to destroy a transmission just to get a line up shaft? That is crazy!!!!! Make one from a 1/2" drive extension and duct tape. Has worked for me for 40 years when I did not have the correct one on hand. And that includes the 151.
