Frame rust replacement panel replace or cover?
OK,
I have the body ready to flip and start replacement of the rotten frame sections. I have the parts and directions, Here is my question, how are most of you doing this kind of repair? Are you going by the directions and putting the repair panels over the rotten sections per the directions and oversize of the repair sections as intended, or are you removing all traces of the old section and welding the parts back on starting new? Also does one do all frame sections first or floors then frame sections. Thanks Matt

I think the proper way is moving the old sections, then welding the new ones on

The PROPER way is the remove the old section and weld in the new section. The reason the new section is larger is so you can get to clean metal to weld through the holes on the flanges. The fact that it will fit over the original makes a lot of people think it is designed to go over the original when in fact that would cause both of them to rot out very fast.

Re: Frame rust replacement panel replace or cover?
Cool thats what I figured and as a Body man for Milwaukee Transit that is what I figured one would do. It just was weird as they just happened to be bigger, thats the way Gov. would do things, and all the verbiage on the rust pep air calls them CAPS, and actual explains the process of COVERING over the rusted parts Making this a future nightmare. CUT, GRIND, REMOVE, FIT, WELD, and hopefully REVELLE in ones work. Thanks guys !!!

Be sure to coat the inside of the new rials before welding them in.

Remove All rust...also spray rust-oleum black paint inside repair after welding...drill some weep holes they slow down the rust by keeping it dry...good luck..
