Transmission installation...

Unread post by colkking » December 28th, 2017, 8:13 pm

Guys,
Had to replace my transmission....got a question:
should I mount the bellhousing to the transmission, then mount the transmission/bellhousing to the engine
OR Mount the bellhousing to the engine, then try to line up the throwout bearing and mount the transmission to the bellhousing/engine assembly?

Inquiring minds want to know.
Thanks,
kk

you would be well served assembling bell housing and then attaching transmission to it.
The whole assembly is meant to be handled as a set not individually.

Bell housing to engine and then trans to bell housing.

one thing i did to make the job easier, was to get an old front transmission shaft, and cut it off so i could use it as a clutch alignment tool. once the bellhousing assembly was complete, and in place, i aligned it all, tightened everything to specs, and then slid the trans into position.

Good advice, Thanks!

I did use an old transmission shaft and lined up the pressure plate...torqued down properly and all lined up.

My 'scratch your head' moment was that I didn't know if it would be easier to install the transmission with the bellhousing attached (and the shaft already thorugh the throwout bearing, but with the extra weight of the bellhousing), or to attach the bellhousing and then work the transmission shaft through the throwout bearing and into the spigot bearing.

Roger-will mount bellhousing first, then bring the new transmission into the fray.

Wish me luck.

I have tried, as have others, to go both off and on with the trans and bell together and never had any luck. Don't really know why but it just will not go together that way. I put the engine on blocks and then hang the transmission from my engine hoist with a long enough strap to give plenty of movement. That way you are not trying to hold that goofy shaped transmission and guide it at the same time, the hoist does the heavy work and you just guide it.

hi

the bell housing hooks on top over the flywheel with the bearing lip for the starter
if you try to get it on with the gearbox the shaft sits to high to go at the clutch
i look always to line up to the clutch plate outside it has nearly the same diameter as the pressure assy if it sits at the middle it is OK

the clutch plate assy from a willy s mb and a m38 a1 has the same nsn number as from the mutt for the mb 2520-00-307-8850 for the mutt 2520-307-8850 :?
are they the same

It would make sense for the government to use the same parts as the M38A1 since they were already in the system and out in the field. I will see if a buddy of mine has any laying around, he is supposed to come back from Florida this week but I am guessing that if he is watching the weather he is going to stay there for another week or two. I would!
