Wheel Alignment Shims

Unread post by kmam » January 23rd, 2018, 9:58 pm

I need shims to do the alignment on my A2. Are they readily available? I can find some that look similar but are described as being for body alignment. Is there anything special about them or can I just cut some shim material into that shape?

Thanks. I found them on google but super expensive with post to Australia. Then googld for the, inAustralia and found plenty but I need to know the dimensions and thickness of the ones used on the MUTT.

It is the place I took it to for aligning that told me to get the MUTT shims :(

I don't have an answer to the issue of thickness but this is something I've been needing to do so I'm going to ask for an opinion. Is there a reason why trimming down two single shims (of appropriate thickness) and placing them side-by-side would not work?

No reason at all. And thickness all depends on what is needed to bring it into alignment. So if you have thinner shims you will just use more of them. You generally need some thick and some thin to get it into spec.

There are two types of shims. Both types are in varying thickness.

The pictures and description of the shims are in Parts List TM9-2320-218-34P (Nov 88) on page 86-1, 86-2 and Fig.86

The "M"-shaped (3-finger) shims are available in sizes 0.030, 0.060 and 0.12 in. (item 36)
The "U"-shaped (2-finger) shims are available in sizes 0.030 and 0.12 in. (item 38).

In the Maintenance TM9-2320-218-34-1 (Jul 88) there is a warning about the maximum permissible number of shims that can be used together to attain correct alignment. It goes on to say that if alignment cannot be achieved without adding excess shims, there is damage or wear to the front suspension components. (page 9-30)

Shims do drop out unless the retaining bolts are torqued correctly and the torque is checked at service.

Those are the shims that were available through the military supply chain. They are no different than the ones available in an alignment shop and individual thickness does not matter as long as the end result is it is aligned with the exception of the maximum as Ken mentioned. I have seen some HUGE shim stacks on these though.
