Dead Fuel Pump?

Unread post by Manhorne » February 11th, 2018, 2:19 pm

I think the in-tank fuel Pump in my m151 died....I am not getting any fuel to the carb. I have voltage at the pump but the pump is not moving any fuel.....I got the jeep to try and start a couple of times after I knocked on the pump but it quit after a few seconds....

Check for a good ground from the tank to the body and from the ground post on the tank sender to the body. Even better is to check the ground right to the battery. If that does not solve the problem I have seen a lot of these break the wire right were it enters the fuel pump under the cover. Needless to say you want everything disconnected before playing with that!

Thanks for the reply....

I will see about checking the grounds. Thinking about the behavior sounds plausible.....

Sometimes the early pumps can get gummed up inside. You can take the bottom off the pump and clean up inside and sometimes they will come back to life.

Thanks for the reply....

I did look at the pump and it did seem gummed up but I was afraid to take it all apart but now that I have seen this I will give that a shot as well.....

If it is working off and on and the filter is clear then it is not likely to be gummed up.

Well, I needed to take it out anyway to check the wire so I figured I would clean it . I checked the grounds and they seem like they are all good. When I had the pump out I checked the wire and it looked good to me. I did not see any problems. I did notice when I tried it after I put it in that I now have no oil pressure so I am going to check the fuel pump safety switch by the oil filter tomorrow and see if I have voltage there and if its working. Out side of that I am at a loss.

Apply 24 volts to the pmp directly.
If it works then you can eliminate that problem.

I am finally able to get back on the G838 site after not being able to the last week...

So a update. It is for sure a dead fuel pump . I hooked it up to a straight 24V and it did nothing at all.
Now to find a replacement or use an alternate pump until I can get the right one....

If you are going to throw the old one in the trash I would be interested in it. I am always looking at them to see what went and how to fix it. Did you put an Ohm meter across the pump lead from hot to ground to see if you have continuity or of it is an open circuit? If it is open then the coil went and it is toast unless the wire broke. I have seen several with broken wires.

If you are doing away with your original electric pump, this pump has been discussed before, I just can find the thread, it is a fuel/vacuum combo, this guy is putting them on his rebuilt engines.

That looks like one solution. If its not a huge problem to do it. I had seen someone mention that pump somewhere but I could not find any information on it or where to get one.

Summit Racing had them for sale a while back, but activator arm didn't fit/wasn't right, never did find a source for the arm.

So I guess I am just stuck with trying to track down an original in-tank pump and forking over the insane amount of cash they are going for.

I tried an In-line 24v pump over the weekend but it worked like crap. It was not a high end one and I just wanted to see what would happen. but i have read in other post that they dont really work all that well and dont last .
