Distributor rebuild

I am about to take my distributor apart and clean it up, paint, etc. Any tips or tricks i need to keep in mind?? Bring on the knowledge!

Pay attention to which way the dog is on at the bottom of the shaft before driving the pin out and removing the gear, you want to be sure to get it back in the right direction. There are two different springs for the mechanical advance, make sure they are in decent shape. Other than that there is really not much to them.

Another question on Distributor Rebuild, What is the purpose of the felt wick at the top of the shaft, and the wick screwed in from the side of the housing? Should they be oiled regularly, and does anybody know of a source for replacement Felt Wicks?
