A2 Rear Shocks

Unread post by m75 » March 9th, 2018, 4:27 pm

It's that time when the replacement shocks are going to be added to the rear suspension arms. Since I ordered parts over several years leading o this time, I ended up with two sets of shock absorbers for the rear end.

Each set has a different bolt hole size. The larger set have the correct part number stamped into the body, with 3/4" bolt openings top and bottom.

Although these two replacements sets are different, they were both advertised as correct replacement parts for the rear suspension. The black set has removeable rubber bushings that accept a smaller diameter bolt than the 3/4 inch from the green set, and the yellow "originals".

The yellow shocks were the ones in place when I purchased the truck. Monroe Gas mAgnums that had the 3/4 inch bolt diameter, but the width of the bolt eye was thinner than the two replacement sets.

Any ideas on which to use? BTW, the two tabs for the lower bolt mount on the suspension arm are too close together to accept the green sets bolt eye.

And also, there is a difference between the -20P illustration of the shock for the rear, showing the main body and the piston that extends upwards when installed. As the replacement sets have the sheet metal shield over the piston, does this affect the installation? The Gas Magnums had "mount this end down" stamped into the body, while the two replacement sets have no such notice. The black set has nothing stamped on the shock at all.

Part Number 110660224 is a Gama Goat shock. It will (just about) fit the M151A2-series but it is wrong and it gives an EXTREMELY hard ride.

See this:- viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1007&p=7185&hilit=gamagoat#p7185

The M-151 never used gas pressurized shocks. Nobody has ever found a civilian replacement for the rear of the A2. I put a Monroe shock sizing chart on here somewhere, Playing catch up after three says without power so don't have time to look for it right now.

I don't have a clue on the Ford shocks but experience would tell me they are far too long. The ones from AJP at least from the description sound like Gamma-goat shocks and are not the correct ones either. They have been used as replacements but are not right. Look in the 2320-218-20P manual available on here for free download and see what the part number is for the correct shock.
On edit, The one from AJP is the correct shock according to the part numbers below.
Here is the manual http://www.g838.org/public_html/added_p ... nuals.html

The correct shock is P/N 11641029
FSN 2540-00-176-9466

Just a little research will get you a ton of info, this was ten minutes on Google. There is more, I just put in a sample and a link to the search.
