Magnesium Wheels

Unread post by bazookajoe » March 17th, 2018, 8:42 am

What years were the magnesium wheels installed on the m151 series. Were they only on the straight 151's?

straight 151 and 59-60 through 63-64. I have never seen a 859 M151 even though that was the first year. I had Mags on my 64 which was pretty much as it came from the military. The original owner was very anal about originality. Unfortunately they were in bad shape and I only have one good one. I think like everything else they were phased out so when the production line ran out that was when they ended.

My M151A1 came with three magnesium wheels. I am guessing the previous owner put them on as they had better tires. I have since taken them off and have the correct wheels.

I would like to get a full set but I am not going to go broke to do so. I would like to put my military tire on them and use them fpr parades and shows and use the steel wheels and radials for road and off road use.

Judging from the comments, the magnesium rims were not very durably/strong as steel? Why were they used then?

They were plenty strong, they just corroded quickly if not taken care of. The main reason for using magnesium is that it is extremely light. The downside is that also tended to raise the center of gravity just a little.

I looked up info on the mag/alum wheels and my comments were way off base about the difference between the two.I'll have to edit this again

Magnesium rims once on fire made a hell of a lot of heat. Magnesium and fire do not mix.

I wouldn't go that far. I think mixing does have some entertainment value. :D

We used to throw blown up VW transmissions in the campfire. Man, once that gear oil started cooking and set the case on fire people backed WAY off! Three or four hours later there was nothing but a mass of glowing gear sets. When I worked in a foundry I used to get small cubes of magnesium and we would toss one or two in the fire at out all night ice skating parties. Kept you nice and warm, problem is that it also burned up all the wood!

Exactly. I think this is why they did away with Magnesium Wheels. They will make a mutt into a pile of nothing. Magnesium is no joke. Once on fire you cannot put it out.

Not really, unless you are really in the smoke deep. It has been far too long since I had advanced chemistry but IIRC the byproduct of magnesium on fire is magnesium oxide and very small amounts of magnesium nitride. None of the crowds of us around those fires ever got sick. It can be extinguished with a class D extinguisher or by burying it and depriving it of air.

Magnesium burns extremely hot. Water will not deprive burning magnesium of oxygen. Magnesium burns hot enough that it can burn under water. The heat is enough to dissociate the oxygen from the hydrogen in water.
