Transfer case bearings

Unread post by Rossco » March 18th, 2018, 6:56 am

Hi all
Once again help please!!

I pulled the transfer case off the rear of my gearbox as could not get the old hand brake seal out of the housing easily.
On further examination of the internals found both the lower gear and the large intermediate gear had chipped teeth and showed signs of wear - so not good.

The missing bits were not in the oil I drained off from the gear box so am picking its been in this state for a while. One thing I did find was one of the circlips (broken) which looks like it came from the 4X4 selector shaft, stuck to the drain plug magnet. It does not look like it has been mashed up by the gears?
Is this a comon problem with the transfer gears prone to this sort of damage? They are a grunty set of gears so its hard to see how they could sustain this sort of damage in normal use?
Are the selector shaft circlips able to make their way into the transfer gear case or could this circlip be from somewhere else?

Also noticed the large intermediate gear runs on a sealed bearing? Is this normal when the bearing is running in an enclosed case with an oil supply?

The big intermediate gear uses loose roller bearings. There are 2 sets separated by a washer, all in all there are 44 rollers. There is no seal. As an example, look at my post a while back: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9242&p=78341&hilit=transfer#p78341

I would be happy to send you an intermediate gear and a lower gear at a low price but shipping will be prohibitive...

Horst

Thanks for your quick response to my question and offer of replacement gears. I have just earlier purchased a NOS transfer case gear set from TNJ Murray so this will address the problem of broken teeth!

So it looks like my intermediate gear has been modified to accept a sealed bearing at some stage rather than use the original loose roller bearing set up. I will disassemble the rest of the transfer case and see what else has been modified ?

Sounds like you are going to need to get bearings also.

Thanks Rick

I have ordered the repair/maintenance kit for the intermediate gear from Army Jeep Parts, which I believe includes all the necessary roller bearing components and thrust washers etc. So another part of the vehicle rebuild is underway!
Buy the time I finish this truck it's going to be like new and owe me a small fortune!!!
