Availability of transfer case bearings

Unread post by Rossco » March 21st, 2018, 5:13 pm

Hi all

Back to my transfer case rebuild,!
I now have it broken down into its component parts and all cleaned up ready to reassemble. Apart from the transfer gears which will replace with a NOS set. it makes sense to replace all the other bearings at the same time.

I know the intermediate gear roller bearings are included with the maintenance kit along with thrust plates etc. Does this kit also include the various snap rings to retain the other bearings?
And are the other bearings readily available in particular the caged needle bearing and sleeve which supports the end of the gearbox output shaft in the transfer case housing?
I havent seen them specifically catalogued in the parts listings available from the US parts dealers I normally trade with ?

as far as I remember the snap rings you are mentioning are not part of the rebuild kit. The caged needle bearing is in fact hard to get but certainly available. I bought it from a dealer in the US. I can try to find the source. Both bearings, the intermediate rollers and the needle bearing made a significant effect in noise generated by the transfer.

Saturn Surplus used to have all of the bearings for the transmission and transfer case along with all of the gears. They sold their entire inventory to Army Jeep Parts. So AJP should have the bearings, albeit at a much higher price than Saturn had them at!

Thanks guys for your response to my question.

Yesterday I checked with my bearing supplier here in NZ and he can provide the small caged needle roller bearing no problem but not the sleeve as this appears to be a special part unique to the M151? My sleeve has rust pitting and the hardening is starting to fail so no point in mixing a new caged bearing with the existing sleeve. Although if these two parts are supplied as a package then happy to purchase both ex USA eBay.

Re the two other bearings at the bottom of the transfer case, just realised these form part of the new transfer case gear set I have just purchased ex USA! So thats cool.
