M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
I have replaced the brushes on my starter and it is spinning in reverse even after reversing the polarity the starter does not change direction, I am powering the starter by wiring a 12v battery and 12v jumper box in series. I have changed the positive brush positions and set the plate position to maximize starter efficiency but nothing has affected rotation direction. Armature position has not been reversed.

Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
hi
a starter motor is a series motor
if you turn the rear shield 90 degrees it will run the right way (LOOK out do not the field brushed at not isolates holders )
to get a series motor run otherwise is to get the power over the field or armature reversed
the power go from the field coil go to the armature then to the ground housing
a parallel motor both the field and armature gets the whole power (if you reverse the power it will run otherwise )
if you have winch it is a series motor also
at a winch motor has three connectors one for the armature two for the field coil (armature is inside to the ground )
if you winch in the power go from one field connector trow the field to the other this one is with the relays to the armature
if you winch out the relays reverse the power at the field connectors and then to the armature

Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
Thank you George however I have already tried rotating the rear plate and reversing the polarity.svramselaar wrote:hi

Rotating the rear plate only affected the efficiency of the starter but not the direction.
Reversing the polarity (reversing the power) did not change the direction either.
(LOOK out do not the field brushed at not isolates holders ) Can you rephrase this please?

have you ever noticed the rear of the 151 starter points to the rear of the jeep and on most cars rear of starter points toward the front of the car?

Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
Is the bendix engaging? will only engage in one direction.
Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
I'd get a new starter

Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
This might sound kind of demeaning but I would just bolt the starter back in the vehicle and see what happens. It is a 5 minute job and is very easy to do and if it does not work it will not harm a thing. I can't see how it could be working and just changing the brushes changed the rotation. Remember that this turns opposite from a regular starter.

Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
It was last started in 2013 or 2014. This year I took The starter apart, cleaned it, and accidentally broke the brushes so I bought replacements. The bendix does not engage, the armature is rotating the opposite direction the data plate shows. The ends of the starter have not been swapped.rickf wrote:This might sound kind of demeaning but I would just bolt the starter back in the vehicle and see what happens. Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
when I install new brushes I always wrap some 320 grit sandpaper around a pencil and put a bit of a curve in the end of the brush so it will seat on the armature

Call Big Mo's in San Antonio. I have no affiliation with them but have done business with them before and they specialize in oddball motors and are proud of their craft. I'd be willing to bet he'd have the answer for you and would be most willing to let you know.
Cheers,

Re: M151A1 STARTER REVERSE POLARITY
Thank you for answering my question folks. I have figured it out.I rotated the cap one bolt hole at a time and after about 15 turns it fixed it.
