cotter pin of the wheel spindle

Unread post by elmer » April 22nd, 2018, 2:51 pm

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to put the cotter pin on the rear wheel axle and although it seems like I can not do it. Someone knows some trick to facilitate the operation.
I do not know if my pin is too long or too thick but I can not pass it at all.
I think it is very uncomfortable because it is inside the whee Spindel and I can not force or maneuver the tool to get it right.
It may not be using the technique or the right tool.If anyone knows a trick I will be very happy.
Sure it's silly problem but I'm desperate. I searched the forum and on the internet and in the end although I feel a bit ridiculous I came to you
Thanks a lot

Do you have a clear clean hole through the yoke? If not, you may have a broke pin still in there, will need a small punch to clean it out, if you have a clean hole, then the pin is too big, nut must line up with hole.

I'll make sure there's no crap inside the hole.
Does the pin have to be bent to put it through the hole? The one I have is 6 cm long and it is very difficult to put it in the hole.
the original that was placed was equally long and I bought an equal one. The original was very damaged and broke when removed.
at the end I could put it in but it has been wrong because it has not been able to enter at all. Next week I have to solve it because is in not in the good position and I think It could get out.

Elmer....you MUST use the correct cotter pin. See my post here:- viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7136&p=59295&hilit=split+pin#p59295

You MUST also read TM9-2320-218-20-1-2 Section 9-5. There's a warning on that page. It says this:-

"Do not reuse the wheel spindle cotter pin or substitute any cotter pin other than NSN 5315-00-011-9120. Failure to use the correct cotter pin may result in wheel assembly falling off vehicle during operation, causing injury to personnel."

If you don't use the correct pin, you put your vehicle and your life at risk

Thank you very much for the help. What a description!!!
now, seeing the right measures I realize that my problem was that it was too long and I had to bend it so much that I finally messed it up and could not put it right

If you can only find ones that are too long you can always cut them down to the length you need. It is the diameter that is the most important part.

Hi,
Do you know when someone is stubborn about doing something and loses perspective of things and this prevents him from finding the solution to a problem? This is what happened to me with the cotter pin. I wanted to put a long one because it was the one that was put and tried to put and put and put instead of cutting it to the right extent and it would have been much easier and comfortable to put. I send the difference between the maximum recommended measure and the one that I tried to put. Next weekend I'll put the new cotter pins in the back socks and I'll tell you how it went.
Thanks a lot for openining my eyes

Live and learn, Elmer and thanks for letting us laugh with you.

I had a firearms instructor who had a unique way of handling us when we were "getting all wrapped around the axle" about getting the correct dope dialed in on our rifle.

He'd nudge our ribs with the toe of his boot and say, "Just shoot the #$%^&@ gun!"

If he were addressing us, I'd imagine he'd nudge our ribs with the toe of his boot, laugh and say, "The cotter pin should never be larger than the hole it goes in."

An old aircraft mechanic would tell you, if you can move the cotter pin once it's installed, you haven't installed it correctly!

I can remember bending the pin a little to get it in the hole, then straightening it as it went in the hole

Interesting post!
Where/who do I go to in the USA to purchase the correct spec cotter pins to retain/secure the hub nuts?
As cotter pins in this part of the world are generally manufactured to metric specifications.
This is all in the interests of self preservation as the last thing anyone needs is the "wheels" parting company with the truck!

Getting the correct size is as easy as going to any auto parts store or hardware store. The BIG problem is getting the correct specification. Most of the stores nowadays buy the cheapest thing they can get so they can make a profit, that means buying Chinese garbage which is far from the original specification. You have to go to someplace like Grainger and look for those pins in that spec. They will probably not have them in stock but they will be able to get them. You could probably have them sent to you in your country also. McMaster-Carr is another possibility but the last time I put in a large order for bolts before I retired I was disappointed because I specified grade 8 bolts and I get Chinese crap. They were marked grade 8 but I will bet that if they were tested they would have failed. It is really hard to find high quality hardware anymore.

Rick, I agree some of the fastners and consumables currently available are rubbish - spring washers are a good example, put any load on them and they simply open up
I found an old box of assorted cotter pins I picked up at a swap meet a few years back, so will see if there is something here that fits the bill?

Hello everyone,
finally, yesterday I Could finish the work on my wheels. All was perfect I bought some cotter pins practically like the ones Jim indicated me and I could put them in their holes correctly. Inside one of them I found a piece of an old pin as Hambone tpld me and it cost me a bit to get it out. Sure that was one of the reasons why I could not put it in the first time I tried do it.
Tomorrow I will add a couple of interesting pics in the post.
Thank you all for your help and advice.
Elmer
