Rust treatment body plugs Where to buy??

Postby Eddie Holland » May 3rd, 2018, 2:32 pm

I once had an A2 that had been treated for rust by the military. They drilled holes in the body and shot some kinda chemical in the frame I guess. I have an A2 now that I had to replace some of the floor board because muddy sandish crap was in the frame. I would like to drill holes in the body and flush the frame out to be safe then put the plugs in. I use to see them on ebay at least once. Anyone know where these plugs can be bought? Anyone know what the military used to rust treat the M151s?
Thanks Eddie

I believe the product you are searching for is called - "caplugs" and they can be purchased on eBay for a little less than $5 for 8 plugs (with free shipping).

I purchased some and they matched my originals exactly.

ok thank you all.. Anyone know what the military was putting inside the frame for rust proofing? I plan to try to make some kind of pressure washer connection to run a hose inside my hat channels and flush them out. Also I urge people to remove there gas tank and look under it. Mine was full of wet sand that rusted the floor out. Luckily I found a donor floor to replace it with.

There is a whole manual available on the subject. Don't see it in our section here but I found it at https://olive-drab.com/archive/od_tb43_0213_rustproofing.pdf
It lists some of the solvents used. I normally hear it referred to as wet film. It also shows the drill pattern for spraying. My buddy Bubba J says they used diesel as well. I believe he says he just sprays inside the rails with it every few years. Smells for awhile. Other downside is you have to park it in the grass for awhile. Eastwood also sells an internal rust coating in aeresol form at https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-inter ... 33d6b20d62

Thanks. Yes I already have some cans of the Eastwood treatment for a while and that is what I have been using on the areas I have repaired.

I have been trying to remember the name of the treatment that was used, It was a regularly advertised treatment. I want to say Rusty Jones but that was not it. It was quite popular at the time. The big problem is that with high volume jobs like that invariably the insides of the rails and such do not get coated as they should. I have seen several undercoated A2's that have rotted out badly. If there is any oil or original mill scale coating on the metal then the undercoating is not going to adhere and water will get between it and the metal and it is all over after that. Faster than if it was not coated.

Pretty sure it was Ziebart, both of mine have been treated. I had a new F150 4x4 I purchased in 76 treated with Ziebart, pretty much the same deal, drilled holes in frame parts and plugged them, sprayed a tar like substance inside, smelled like tar for about a month. Down here at the beach they say it was the best. Not sure if they do it anymore.
