adjusting valves

Unread post by 68impalass » May 12th, 2018, 9:27 am

Here is one I don't understand. I removed the valve cover to adjust valves and noticed there is no valve seals on the exhaust valves. In the 40 years I've worked on engines I have never seen this and the books verify this. Is it OK to install seals on these valves?

You can but exhaust valves are under pressure and intake valves are under vacuum. So exhaust valves do not usually need seals since the oil is pushed out of them. You can install them if you like but keep in mind that exhaust valves are much hotter than the intakes.

Wouldnt seals burn and fail quickly if installed in exhaust valves?

On the m-151 probably. On some other engines with water passages on that side of the head the valve stems will cool off enough so as not to destroy the seals. The M-151 does not have water passages on that side of the head.
