Correct Stencils for an A2

Unread post by russnj » November 24th, 2008, 10:51 pm

Hi All

I am working on repainting my A2, and I was wondering what stencils are correct for a late model A2? The battery cover I have says Check batteries daily. And looks to be about 1 inch stencil. Anybody know of what else is correct?

Thanks

Ok thanks, but does anyone have pictures of them and there correct locations? A friend of mine has a military stencil machine and we will be making them ourselves. I am not worried about the stars yet.

Lots of variations in stenciling. Kind of depends on the time period and who did it. Remember that the majority of it was done with minimal supervision by young men just out of high school. Different commanders would also issue different stenciling requirements.

What time period are you restoring your mutt to depict? 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's? We can answer you much better with a little more info. What branch of service?

On the batteries 1" or 3/4" - CHECK BATTERIES DAILY
On the dash passinger side or on the back of windshield frame just above dash 1 or 3/4 inch -CAUTION SUDDEN TURNS CAUSE ROLLOVERS

Oh the body side under gas tank opening 1 or 3/4 inch - DO NOT OVER FILL ALLOW FOR EXPANSION

On th gas tank to the right of the filler visible while standing next to vehicle 1 or 3/4 MOGAS

On front fender side above front tire 3/4 inch TP-20, on rear fender side above rear tire in 3/4 inch TP-25

On inside of hood so that it can be seen when hood is raised in 1 inch SECURE HOOD IN RAISED POSITION

There may be a few that were unit or command specific, but these are the most common markings found on M151s and since you said it was an A2 we know the vehicle can only be 1970s through the 80s and early 90s...so these markings will be correct.
There is one nut on a M151 that is very difficult to remove.....

Hey russnj,

I'd say the picture muttland posted will be accurate for the late model stencil pattern. Early 70's A2's didn't have the black stars or the hood stencils, at least when I drove them. I feel sure the picture is a civilian jeep and not on active duty based on the glasses on the windshield and the ww2 age shovel. Not sure what year the car is in the background. I'm hoping the subject of "Hood Stars" comes up and what direction they point! :D Don't forget about the anti-freeze stencils under the hood. Late model A2's I believe had more dashboard stickers than we had too. Bottom line is what Raymond said... lots of variations due to the soldiers doing the stenciling and varying commanders preferences, basic color is much more important. From my more recent experience in the hobby, fewer dodads draw fewer complaints from your peers. Overdoing stencils, stickers, and dodads bring many negative comments. My personal opinion, it's your jeep, do what you want, paint and stickers can be removed or covered up by your eventual replacement. Hope it turns out the way YOU like it! :)

Well Rainman, since you brought it up, LOL, the answer to which way the stars point is: it depends hehehe...

If its an Army vehicle, the hood star points to the radiator, vertical stars are point up.

If its an Air Force vehicle, the hood star points to the windshield, vertical stars are point up.

of course, as you noted, since soldiers did the painting, and the Sgts didn't always keep an eye on them, in real life you were liable to see anything....
