Compound Sealer nsn 8030-00-159-8176

Unread post by markrodger » May 22nd, 2018, 3:01 am

Hi, I am new to Mutts and recently purchased a 1975 A2. I have oil leaking from the differentials and have ordered new seal kits. I have just downloaded the workshop manual from this site and the replacing of the seals looks straight forward. The question I have is this, the manual says that I need to coat the seal with compound sealer NSN - 8030-00-159-8176. What kind of sealer is this, is there a modern equivalent available or where can I buy it.

Quick cross-reference search brings up form-a-gasket no. 2.

My personal favorite that I used for many years in my shop was Permatex Aviation #3. It can be used on all paper gaskets and I use it on all water hoses also. It seals them and also keeps them from seizing to the steel and aluminum water necks. It is in a brush on liquid form in a jar with a brush and has worked for me on everything I have ever used it on.

From what I can see on their site it should work just fine. Looks like some excellent stuff, and probably rather pricey. I didn't look that far.
