distributer setting
Here's what I have going on,
Dist. is set all the way back to the stop(counter clock wise) starts easy, all plug wires are in correct location.
Fresh brooks carb on her, runns best with about 3/8's pull on the choke.
Can't find any vacumleaks.
Any help would very appreciated
Best regards
Lindsay
PS, This engine ran perfect when removed from vehicle

Re: distributer setting
Is the timing set on the mark? Are the valves set? If it has points are they clean and set? If all of the above are not set correctly first then you cannot do a proper diagnosis. You should be able to put two fingers snug between the input wire going into the distributor and the oil filter. That is an indication that the distributor is close to where it needs to be. If the timing is still way off then to oil pump is in wrong.

Re: distributer setting
Do you mean to say the between the wire and filter? Or do you mean between body of the distributor where the wire goes in and the filter? I thought it was the later.

Well, The distributor is never going to get any closer to the oil filter no matter how much you turn it so it would have to be the wire, or the connector that the wire is attached to. Basically I mean the connector or whatever part is two fingers from the oil filter. That is close enough, you can't time it that way, just get it in the ballpark so that you can time it.

Re: distributer setting
Rick, how can you tell if the oil pump is in wrong? (on the wrong side of the cam on the shaft?)

Re: distributer setting
All I remember about the oil pump is the slot has to parallel to the block.

Re: distributer setting
So just to jump in here.. my dist is turned almost all the way aft to get the timing mark where it should be. When the mark is in line with the pointer the truck doesn’t run well and is hard to start. I’ll still need to put #1 at TDC and observe the position of the rotor, but if the pump is in fact the cause of the poor operation how involved is the fix?

Re: distributer setting
The powerpac has to come out and the oil pan has to come off to access the pump and get it in the right location. Or you can drop the front subframe but pulling the powerpac is just as easy.
