Substitute a piece of wire for the inline capacitor and see if runs.

Thanks again, all. I did check the valves and pushrods plus the fuel was OK and we disassembled the carbie several times with no sign of water or other junk.

Looking at the manual I see that the condensor is in line with the 24V input. Now I know that, I will check the continuity between the input and the condensor connection to the Swiss module. Will also give Fil's suggestion a try. Unfortunately I cannot do get to it for another week now...

Well, it is still dead. Here is what I have done so far:

1. Pulled the carbie off (several times) and cleaned/checked it
2. Changed the spark plugs
3. Checked the distributor rotor is approximately correct when number 1 cylinder is TDC
4. Checked the voltage to the distributor
5. Checked that the suppressor condensor is 0 ohms
6. Checked that 24V is passing through the condensor to the coil
7. Checked the coil resistances are correct
8. Changed the coil for a new (Chinese) one to be sure
9. Checked the voltage when the starter was turning over - 23.6V
10. Connected the 24V from a Landrover to the MUTT batteries and had the Landrover running while I tried to start the MUTT
11. Checked the valves were opening/closing at the correct point for number 1 cylinder
12. Checked the pushrods were all OK
13. Tried starting with fuel fed into the air inlet of the carbie
14. Checked the fuel flow from the electric pump
15. Checked that there was no damage to the wiring inside the distibutor
16. Checked the resistance from the distributor cap connection to the coil rotor connection - 0 ohms
17. Checked the continuity of the spark plug leads
18. Checked the flow through the fuel filters (I have the metal one at the carbie and a third party one at the connection to the fuel tank.
19. Checked the spark from a lead to earth - weak
20. Tried to run a timing light when running the starter but it flashed VERY weakly.
21. Ran a jumper directly from the 24V input to the distributor to the 24V connection on the coil, bypassing the suppressor condensor
22. Checked the rotor is rotating by removing the distributor cap and watching while the starter motor operated

With all this done it still will not kick. I very rarely get a hint that it might but that is all. The starter spins the motor just fine without any strange noises. I have come to the conclusion that the only part still to be checked is the Swiss Controls electronic ignition module. So far as I know there is no way to test it other than having the engine run so I bit the bullet and ordered another one from the US (another USD109 down the drain) and will swap that over when it arrives.

In the meantime, can anyone suggest anything I may have missed?

You have covered all the bases plus some. The weak spark seems to be the key here. Have you pulled the plug occasionally to see that they are not gas fouled? That is the worst thing that can happen to a plug. If they are heat them up with a propane torch until the gas burns out of them. Do not get them red hot! As far out as you are and as hard as it is to get parts you ought to think about running points or at least have either a complete points distributor set up and ready to drop in OR a points plate with the points in it already gapped and wired up so you can take out the swiss module and put in the points if broke down in the middle of nowhere. points are VERY reliable.

Beg, borrow or steal a gi coil while you are doung all this work.
It will eliminate that possibility.

Installed the new module today and have a great spark - but it still will not start! I have no idea what the problem is and will now use a timing light to confirm that the timing is correct ( previously checkd by watching number 1 pot and rotor position). Once that is confirmed I think my only option is to have the carbie overhauled by a specialist.

Is there any possibility the problem could be related to the manifold? I am clutching at straws here but looking for any possibilities.

With the intake hose off and the choke pulled out do you get gas coming out of the mouth of the carb? Then you push the choke in and crank it and it should at least pop. even if the timing id off you should get some reaction. You would have to have a massive intake leak for it to not fire at all. If you do not get any gas with the choke out then you probably are not getting any gas into the carb, try putting your hand over the mouth of the carb and crank the engine. You should get a LOT of gas in short order. If not you have a carb problem or a gas supply problem. I believe you already checked that. I can easily walk you through the carb if you like. I am guessing you do not have any M-151 carb specialists there.

Spark, fuel, compression is all you need...

Spark you have...

Fuel?
is there fuel in the bowl of the carb? Easy to check, remove the drain plug at the underside of the carb and fuel must come out. If not, either no supply to the carb or a stuck float valve (which I had a few times in the past using gas with too much ethanol)

Thanks for coming back guys. We do not get fuel flowing out as you describe Rick. There is fuel pumping to the carb and when we last took it off to check it out the bowl was full, Horst. Do you have amy suggestions Rick as to where we should look next? Just to recap, I dove the MUTT at about 50mph for some 20 miles without problems. Then met up wih my mate in his GPW and we drove off into the bush. On the way we stopped to talk to some road workers and the MUTT would stall if I did not keep the revs up. We drove a further 8 miles and stoppd for anout half an hour for a walk. After that it would not start and has never started again. In an earlier post I list all the steps taken to resolve this.

We have good spark, fuel is pumping well (electric pump) and believe timing is at least approximate. Could there be an issue with the manifold? The puzzling thing is that it ran fine, had an idle problem then never ran again which defies all logic, given the steps we have taken to resolve it...

I am hoping there will be a Eureka! moment but find it hard to see what it is going to be.

Forgot to mention that feeding fuel into the carbie air inlet does not do anything either.

Did you hold the throttle butterfly open when you shot the gas into the carb? kinda hard to get the gas in the side draft.

Yes, we used a bottle with a squirter top to inject the fuel, Hambone
