Electrical issue

Unread post by breynos2 » July 21st, 2018, 6:25 pm

Hey y’all, I let my mutt sit for about a year and I was trying to get it started - it was only starting with starter fluid and my brother was behind the wheel giving it throttle. All of a sudden the mutt died, no power, lights, engine. The mutt is a 1966 that was my late father’s and I don’t know much about it.

Do mutts have fuse boxes?

Is there any diagnostic tests I can do to determine the issue?

Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Both batteries are fully juiced.

The mutt died while my brother was really reving the motor as I was spraying the starter fluid.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Ben

Start with simple. Let's check those grounds and the jumper between batteries first and make sure the juice can get to where it needs to go.

Thanks for the quick response. The terminals are all ifhtlu connected. Th fact that the Mutt died while the Mutt was at high RPMs while in neutral led me to believe I’ve blown a fuse (if fuses exist)

No fuses, see if it still has points and if they are set correctly. Check to see if there is power going to the coil with the switch on. Check to see if the rotor is turning in the distributor while cranking. Hopefully he did not break something, not likely since these motors are pretty much self limiting as far as RPM. Not saying it can't happen but I haven't seen one unload yet. If you have no lights or power to anything then take all of the battery cables off, clean them and put them back on, that includes the area under the bolts and wing nuts.

And by the way, really revving a motor while spraying starter fluid is a good way to hole a piston!

I think he also said he had no lights (which I took to mean headlights). That's why I suggested checking those grounds. if I read it correctly he's saying he has no power anywhere.

Breynos2, you'll need to check not only the terminals but also the grounded end of your Negative cable where it attaches to the body.
