N.O.S Brake Drums

Unread post by miljeep » July 25th, 2018, 12:12 pm

I have 1988 dated brake drums, my question is what is the RED primer/coating that is coating them made of and how do you remove it, nothing I've tried fazes it, DOT 3, Oven Cleaner any suggestions...
Thanks, Scott O&O

First thing that pops in my mind is red oxide but the second is if it holds on that well, why would you want to remove it?

I should of mention that it is coating the whole drum the inside too, that is the only part of it that I want to remove I dont think it would be of any good for the brake shoes...

Likely as not that is preservative and also, likely as not, they should be turned just to ensure they're true. The slightest turn will take that coating off and you're good to go with perfectly true drums..

I agree, I have never seen new drums for anything that were actually round. Finding a place to cut drums is getting harder and harder. Or at least finding someone that actually knows how to do it correctly. And by the way, that red oxide will have lead in it so if you decide to take a whiz wheel to it be sure to wear a respirator and shower well afterwards.

Well I called around to find a shop that would turn the drums and as Rick said it would be a hard find, I finally called an machine shop that we would use years ago he said he would do them but he was leaving on vacation so I have to wait a week, but I did find something that took it off, I used a 3M nylon wheel that I had... Some auto dealerships still do it. After a ton of searching I found a local Ford dealership still had the machine and someone who actually knows how to use it so they did mine. Cost me $40 a pair.
