white smoke comming out of exhaust

Postby acudanut » August 10th, 2018, 10:42 am

Should I run it longer and see if it clears up ? White smoke means antifreeze is burning.
It's been a long time since I have pulled a head off a Mutt. I know not to unbolt the exhaust and intake manifolds.
Any advise and torque specks putting it back together ?

If it were mine and I had that problem I would remove the head and at least replace the gasket.
Checking the surface and valves would be a worthwhile thing to do.
Taking off the manifolds would make things easier.
Specs for torque settings are in the -34.
I would refer to that for specifics.

Hope that this helps

I would check for bubbles in the radiator.

I hate to disagree with Fil but I would certainly not touch the manifolds. In my opinion leave them on the head for the beginning. I would only remove them if work on the head is required. Get a new gasket and get copper spray designed for head gaskets. After you removed the head, make sure all the water passages, specifically that one very little one, are open and not clogged. Check the head and the block for warpage with a good straight edge.

Overall not really a terrible job...

Again, Be sure you actually HAVE a blown head gasket before going to the trouble of pulling the head. Is that a new muffler or the one that came with it. If it is the one that came with it you have no idea what was in the muffler. Fill the radiator to the top and run it while watching for a steady flow of bubbles. It will overflow as the water warms up and expands and you may see a few bubbles as it warms up but it you see a steady flow of bubbles or if you see oil then you know the head gasket is gone. One thing you can check is to see if the head bolts are actually torqued, I have found more than one vehicle with loose head bolts. You will still need to replace the gasket but at least you know what happened. Also chase the threads in every head bolt hole since I have seen several with the holes not fully tapped to the bottom. Usually the last two in the back. Pull the spark plugs and see if any are wet with antifreeze.

Will do Rick.
Yes, it has a complete new exhaust on it.
Since the new oils smells like gas, I will drain it and add a new filter and see what happens.
Thanks for your help.

Rick, The fuel pump was a new old stock. The diagram could have dried out I suppose, and could be pouring fuel into the engine oil. Other than taking it out and looking at it, I will change oil and try again. I believe upon initial start up, I flooded it bad.
Glad to be home. I escaped DC successfully. What a nightmare of congestion and price raping out there.

I have to go through the outskirts of DC in a couple weeks on my way to the Virginia Rally, I do not plan not stopping! Driving 63 feet of RV and trailer on the beltway is a nightmare in it's own right.

Good News. I found the return line, going back to fuel pump was filling my oil pan with gas (the oil pan had over a gallon of gas in it). So, I Blocked that off, changed oil and filter and I am in business. :D
Oh, I also pulled all plugs and dried them with brake clean. They were very nasty. All good, except a small leak in radiator now. Cheers.

Glad to hear you got it figured out. So you are putting an a2 engine and lines in that a1 or is this another project?

Nope same old project. (66 mutt with a A2 engine) This is the same jeep that you help post pictures of Matt. This jeep had a PITA fuel injected engine in it,along with a ton of extra wires and voltage reducers and a locked up rusted transmission. Not to mention a ton of rot in the frame rails.
As soon as I put in the 2 drive shafts (after I replace the 4 u-joints). I will take it for a spin. This Jeep has not run under it's own power in over 30 years.
Big thanks to Rick. This man Knows his stuff...Cheers !!!!
