Once again , the key to the discussion is
Where the connections are made.
Typically the radios are connected to the battery not thru a cut off switch.
If it is done that way as was done on the vehicle then there is connection to ground via the radio’s negative lead and the antenna shield.
Do we agree?
Sorry for hijacking the topic.

True Fil. But in service they did not have cutout or isolation switches. When one is fitted between battery negative and vehicle frame/body and the radio negative connection is to frame/body or the output of the cutout/isolator there is no possibility of the radio obtaining power via the coax or any other earth connection while ever the cutout/isolator is turned off.

I am glad to hear that but Howard said the same thing I did several times just using different words. No matter, we all agree on the radio bit. NOW, back to the original problem.

Well good news. The alternator is OK and if I need diodes in future the service guy believes he can come up with them. I have put it back in the MUTT and now I have no leakage, well a few mA only. Not sure what happened, why it showed leakage and why it is fixed. Perhaps when I pulled the circuit breakers, switches and instrument cluster out then pulled and reconnected the plugs something was corrected. Whatever, I am a happy mutter and I took it for a short drive today (rain dictated the length of the drive) and it ran nicely. Will try and get a long run in over the next few days.

Things that fix themselve are spooky!
I would continue to watch things.
If you know the make and model of the alternator you may be able to purchase the brdige assembly from Southern Automotive. Bought a set from them for my Prestolite some time ago.
