valve push rod
Ok, while checking the valve clearance, one such rod came loose from the tappet, so the best way to put back in place is take loose the tappet assembly? The tappet screw turns really hard as I was going to just loosen it all the way to fit the push rod in place. But as hard as it turns maybe not? Any guidance ?
One more thing, I set the tappets clearance(.015" a couple of days ago)But when starting up there is a loud loose tappet noise. Then it would go away after driving it for a while. Before the pushrod came out, the clearances all had a slight drag on the feeler gauge

Re: valve push rod
The adjustment screws are normally tight to turn, this keeps them from turning while in operation. Sometimes you can put a piece of wood against the valve end of the rocker and push hard enough to get the clearance to pop the push rod back in. Be sure that the cylinder is at TDC so you have to move the valve as little as possible.

Re: valve push rod
Be aware that a popped push rod can be caused by a stuck valve.
Make sure the associated valve is moving correctly.
Had the same symptons on two different engines over the years.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Fil, how does a stuck valve happen? If the mutt sat for a while, does that cause it?But it has been driven at least once a week

Re: valve push rod
The ones I saw were because they had set for some time.
Rust had formed on the exhaust valve stem and seize it.

Re: valve push rod
Keep in mind that there is a spring holding the rocker arm in place.
If for some reason the rocker moved off the valve stem you could also see the push rod come loose
Have had that happen while I was adjusting valves Hot.
