Drain Plug

Unread post by kmam » December 15th, 2018, 1:13 am

My transfer box drain plug is leaking and I suspect it is the gasket as I used one that was close to the correct size but obviously not good enough. Can anyone tell me the specs on the gasket, item 10 on page 66-1 of the parts list, so i can source it locally?

Boy, are you going to be sorry you asked for this information!      But here it is right from the official source, the specs are at the very end. If you can't find these you can always find regular nylon or hard fiber gaskets used for oil drain plugs, just take your plug with you to the parts store and match one up. Just so you know, all of the drains on the diffs, oil pan and transmission use the same one.

Thanks Rick. You can stop searching now :D

Glad to hear you are recuperating. It can be frustrating but the final outcome makes it worthwhile. All the best, Howard

Kmam,

If you can not source good ones locally, PM me your address and I will post 5 of these to you. They do contain asbestos, don't know if that's a problem shipping internationally or not.

Hey Lee, How many drawers full of those do you have? I used to do that with o-rings we used on high performance air cooled VW engine heads. I had a ton of them for sure. Probably still do somewhere.

Rick, you know the drill :D , a couple or three. I service a good deal of local Military Vehicles and replace them at every service. The problem with current production solid copper or aluminum is you have to torque the finless brown trout out of them to seal. I've got old people skin now that doesn't heal as fast as it used to and I've left enough bark under these things.

Howard,
No problem, but I don't mind and will even pay the boat ride across the pond. So don't be bashful if you do end up needing them.

I know what you mean about the newer copper washers. The trick with them is to anneal them before using them and then they are nice and soft and you do not have to crank as hard on them. Never worked with the aluminum washers as a seal for oil.

I never thought of annealing the copper. I should have known though as I anneal rifle brass all the time. I have a box of new copper washers, I will try that.
