Slips out of 2nd gear
Took the Mutt out today for a run, first time in months. Took me a little time to get used to driving her again but discovered that she kept slipping out of 2nd gear. Anyone got any advice on what to look at, this has never happened before.

Re: Slips out of 2nd gear
If it was not happening before and all of a sudden it is I have to ask if you have kids that like to play in the mutt and shift gears when it is sitting there? If they get rambunctious and really pull hard on the shifter the shift forks can get bent. If that is not the case then you need to take the top off of the transmission and look at condition of the forks and the gears.

Re: Slips out of 2nd gear
Going to need more info to help you figure this out.
Is there any new slop in the shifter,
Does it grind going into 2nd,
does it pop out as soon as you shift and release clutch.
does it pop out on decell,
can you hold it in 2nd?

Re: Slips out of 2nd gear
Ok the only kid that gets near the Mutt is me, no new noises, shudders or anything else new. Put it in gear let out the clutch and pull away, it then slips out of gear if I keep my hand on the stick it will stay in gear
Re: Slips out of 2nd gear
I had the same problem with my 1952 38A1, transmission needed rebuilt, I think it was the synchronizer, which was a common problem for that jeep

Re: Slips out of 2nd gear
bad synchro as previously stated. Happens because people 'ride' the shifter with their hand, applying pressure the the shifter, fork and ultimately the synchro. Synchro being the softest part wears out first. Shortly after that comes the shift fork damage.
Some people are too busy knowing it all to ever learn anything
Re: Slips out of 2nd gear
Typically a worn synchronizer, (Blocking ring) will cause grinding into that gear before any other issues develop. If prior to the popping out of gear complaint there were no scrapping, grinding, roaring noises, then I would say something broke, has become stuck or loosened.
I would first drain the lube, see what's stuck to the magnets and if the lube looks like gold metal flake.
