It was a strange one, I was at my desk doing paperwork and he came up behind me and asked me to call for security because he did not feel well. He was very Spanish so at first I thought he just wanted to check his blood pressure and I said ok and I turned around to get my kit and he was gray! I have seen dead bodies with more color!!! I got him in a chair and got the medics called With a defib unit and I checked his pulse and heart rate. Pulse was strong and heart rate was pretty close to normal but this man was walking dead. He actually coded twice on the way to the hospital. He was fine after a stent and some bed rest. This guy had more energy and worked harder at 65 years old than any of the younger guys. He was talking about moving back to Puerto Rico after he retired and I am hoping he didn't due to those storms flattening that place. He retired the year before I did.

"Do you have the proper shoe hold down springs? "

Yes, fitted all new shoes, cylinders, springs and hoses when I was doing the restoration.

Looks like I have to get more shoes but will take it to the brake bloke to see if he has a solution.

Did you get around to repairing the backing plate? Just wondering how you ended up repairing it.

Not yet. Have bought a suitable bolt, drill bit and borrowed some taps. Had a mate bend the shoe into shape with a hydraulic press and plan on starting the repair today.

Just drilled and tapped for the bolt which you can see in the picture. Pick up some loctite 263 tomorrow and then finish the job.

The brake shoe on the left is another disaster waiting to happen. I thought you bought new brake shoes! ?

Had not noticed that - thanks. They were new and have only done less than 1,000km :( Looks like another order and more time on blocks...

And you might want to put a large fender washer on there to try to keep the shoes from sliding off the end of the post. With the springs in place the washer should be snug to the post. So put the washer on the bolt and the locktite on the bolt and start the bolt in almost all the way and then pop the springs on and run the bolt in until you have just enough room for the springs to be removed without binding. That way the loctite will set up in the correct place and you will not have to disturb it. Make sure the washer is not so high it will hit the drum.

Good idea Rick, thanks. Will do that once the crack in the shoe is welded.
