Transmission Replacement

Unread post by CaptB » January 28th, 2019, 2:31 pm

Due to time constraints I have decided to replace my transmission with a NOS unit, I will rebuild the exsisting unit later at my leasure. My question is, what gaskets or other items will I need for this change out.

Regards

I'm thinking this one http://armysurpluswarehouse.com/m151-tr ... 88-s-b123/
and I'd probably change out the dust cover pieces on the trans cover as well...

but this one is meant for an early with the ratchet style hand brake. You'll need the flat rubber piece for the later model hand brake.

Did you drain the lube as suggested and check what was in it? I'm just curious to see what you may have found.

The only gaskets you will need is the Transmission to bell housing and a exhaust gasket.

Thanks for the info on the gaskets. The initial problem with slipping out of 2nd gear quickly got worse. I had to take the mutt for an emissions test, after a few miles it would not even go into 2nd (interesting journey changing from 1st to 3rd when pulling out of junctions). At one point there was a rather loud bang from the transmission, we stopped had a look underneath but could not see nothing. From then on the speedo did not work, sounded like something had dropped off and went through the gears. Heading back overseas today for another month so won't be any updates for a while, I will post details and photos when I get round to opening up the transmission.

Thanks again all
