results of loose parking brake drum bolt
A Gentleman brought a MUTT transmission to my shop yesterday for a rebuild. He mentioned he was a member here but didn't catch his username. I popped the top while he was here and it looked really nice inside. I thought cool, new bearing, seals and all good.
SO, I pulled the transfer case drain plug tonight................... Something not nice going on.
Removed the speedo gear housing and pulled the speedo gear out.........ouch
Took a damn bit of effort to get the transfer case separated.
Previous owner must have driven a good ways with the parking brake drum bolt backed out as it pushed the speedo gear and output shaft race/spacer back. The race is seized to the main shaft, the output bearing is seized to the race, the speedo gear is seized to the main shaft and look at that cooked bearing.
At some point someone either discarded the bolt lock or didn't lock the bolt when repairs were made.
Something to keep in mind to peek at during your next PM.

Re: results of loose parking brake drum bolt
looks like a good bit of heat on that gear also. Looks pretty "blue".
Still crazy after all these years.

Gear is what I meant to type lol.

That would be from where the speedo gear gouged out the front of the gear! Is it an illusion or is that speedo drive bent? This is not the first time I have seen that chewed off speedometer drive from the brake drum coming loose.

Got a duplicate of that chewed up speedo gear down cellar for the same reason.
Happened on the maiden run of my last build in. NOS transmission .
I failed to fully check out the transmission before I used it.

I believe the other half became attached to the magnetic plugs after being reduced to shavings.....

Re: results of loose parking brake drum bolt
Have you looked down in the transfer shifter area for the piece? Looks like the bottom half of it had separated long before the top and was working around a bit. Looks almost smooth. Odd there are no gouges in the bottom of the case from that chunk going between the lower gears and the case. Been a while since I was in one of them (Thankfully ) but I remember there was not much clearance in there. Not much clearance getting the countershaft out for sure, I had to wrap a rag around it and lift since it and my fingers would not fit together!

Re: results of loose parking brake drum bolt
Barlow L I just read that you drained the 151 transfer case oil, I thought the box and the transfer case used the same oil but obviously not. I have just installed a new transmission and the only reason I haven't driven the mutt is because after sitting for eight months the engine wont start. That probably saved the transfer case from destruction. I expect I will find a drain plug and a fill plug tomorrow when I get underneath. I'm glad I read your post. How much oil for the transfer case ?

There are two plugs on the side of the transmission, you do NOT want to take out the TOP one!!! On the later transmissions it is a different type of plug and the standard wrench will not fit it but it is the same thread as the drain and fill plugs so anybody could have put an old style reverse shift fork pivot pin bolt in there. The fill plug is the lower of the two plugs and actual looks like it is lower than it should be, it is recessed back a bit into the transmission and is the same style bolt head as the drain plug. The specified amount of oil is for the total fill of the transmission as a unit, that includes the transfer case. If you pull the top plug and there is a pin on it then you are going to be saying a lot of nasty things because you will no longer have reverse and you will be fishing in the transmission with a magnet trying to retrieve the fork from the bottom.

Re: results of loose parking brake drum bolt
There are two drain plugs but the units are interconnected. You fill them from the one spot and it fills both. You can drain from either one or both. There is just a little bit of a pocket in the bottom of each case that traps the last of the oil and another magnetic plug.
